Post Register Article RE: Dean Cook

For those who may have missed it, this was an article printed in the Post Register, last Thursday regarding Dean Cook.

THURSDAY APRIL 03, 2014-I.F. Soccer Community Loses Pioneer Cook; By MARLOWE HEREFORD mhereford@postregister.com

Dean Cook got involved with soccer like many parents because his children played. Cook has been a fixture in the soccer community for years and is the president of the Bonneville Youth Soccer League as well as coaching numerous teams. Idaho Falls soccer community is mourning the loss of a man who helped build the sport’s growth in this area.

Dean Cook, longtime Bonneville Youth Soccer League president, club soccer coach and former Idaho Falls High School varsity girls soccer coach, died Monday at 62.

He coached soccer for 25 years — 16 with the Tigers — and had a hand in raising funds for the Idaho Falls Soccer Complex expansion that resulted in four new fields and the installation of lights at the two fields bordering West Broadway during the 2012-13 season.

Among the numerous condolences left on his obituary’s guest book on the Wood Funeral Home website and the BYSL Facebook page were several acknowledgments of how well Cook did his many jobs. Cook did everything from working with referees to scheduling all District 6 soccer games to rewriting the rules, regulations and bylaws for BYSL.

Although Cook never played soccer, he became involved because his children played. One of his sons, Ryan Cook, has been Idaho Falls High School’s boys varsity head coach since 2010.

Cook was involved in so many aspects of local soccer, all BYSL games were canceled this week when the news of his death was shared.

“Everyone was part of an email chain — Pocatello Valley Soccer League, Jefferson Youth Soccer League, Madison Youth Soccer League, Blackfoot Youth Soccer League,” said Charlie Brizzee, BYSL’s director of coaching. “Everyone on this side of the state, they are very aware and feel the impact and the hole of Dean’s absence.”

The young players always remained his top priority, said current U-17 Ballistic coach and former Idaho Falls varsity boys soccer coach Nick Josten.

Josten first met Cook when Josten’s kids were about 10 years old and playing competitive soccer.

“Dean wanted to provide something for everybody,” Josten said. “He’d already been involved in soccer for 10 years when I first got involved. He was there to give something to those kids and it just seemed like that was enough motivation for him.”

Brizzee and Josten both said what made Cook good at wearing his many hats was his passion for soccer and a willingness to help.

“He’d volunteer for everything,” Josten said. “The guy was always taking the hard jobs and the jobs other people didn’t want to do. He just kept a perspective of what it was he was doing and why he was doing it.”

“He was involved at every level that is possible in this area,” Brizzee said. “I can tell you one of his personal philosophies, and we discussed this multiple times over the years, is there’s always a place to play for any kid if they wanted to play, regardless of the level.”

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Idaho Falls Stake Center located at 2025 Jennie Lee Drive. Visitation is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the stake center.

GAMES CANCELLED-Message from District II (Snake River League)

FYI-All Snake River League Games for this week are CANCELLED. Games in the Snake River League will begin during the week of April 7, 2014.

Message from IYSA District II Commissioner Bobbi Tracy:

As I’m sure you can imagine; we are still reeling from the Shock of losing our fearless leader, friend, and family member.  Ryan Cook is trying to get all the “family” details figured out, and Bobbi Tracy is trying to get all the “soccer” stuff figured out.  Dean had HUGE shoes to fill in all his capacity’s, so it will be a bit of a challenge in getting everything back in “smooth” running order.  So your patience is greatly appreciated.  (And thank you for all your thoughts and prayers, they are felt and appreciated.)

Dean Cook will have a viewing Friday night and his funeral will be Saturday.  Ryan is at the funeral home right now, so arrangements will be announced ASAP.

As District Commissioner, I am making the EXECUTIVE DECISION … that ALL games for this week is CANCELLED.  For Dean, for wet fields, for proposed upcoming storm warning ….(and for those that have made that suggestion … thank you)

UPDATE 2-Referee Clinic in March

Ladies and Gents due to overlap between this referee clinic and a coaching clinic I [Peter Stilling] have been asked by many of you if I could stagger the clinics so that many of you could participate in both.  I cannot move the coaching clinic, but I can move the referee clinic.  As such, the referee clinic will be moved.  See below for new dates and times.

Here is the update / modification (Revision 2 as of 1/24/2014) to the Rexburg USSF ELC (Entry Level Clinic)

Due to the National Office changing the methodology of the ELC (USSF Entry Level Clinic / USSF Grade 8 clinic) I have had to modify my clinic to accommodate this new paradigm.  Entry Level Clinics / Grade 8 clinics are still 16 hours long, but 8 hours of the clinic is now done online prior to attending the 8 hours in the classroom.

As such, I have shortened my clinic classroom dates to:

Wednesday, March 19 thru Thursday, March 20.

BYU-Idaho
Smith Building Room 323
Rexburg, Idaho

Wednesday, March 19th, 6-10pm, Classroom Instruction

Thursday, March 19th, 6-10pm, Classroom Instruction, Testing, Grading, and Registration

Because of all of the rearranging and such I have had to drop the opportunity to hear from our guest speakers.

I offer them my gratitude for being willing to donate their time, but time is clearly against us in this case.

All attendees MUST preregister with me.  If you do not pre-register you will not be given instructions on how to do the online portion of the clinic.

If you do not do the online portion of the clinic, you will not have your certificates of completion and thus I will deny you entrance to the classroom portion of the clinic.

ALL ATTENDEES MUST PREREGISTER WITH ME, PETER STILLING.  My contact information is located at the bottom of this message.

The clinic is $25 and to register with USSF is $40 for a total of $65.  For those paying by check, make the check out to ISRC for $65.00

Cash is also acceptable.  No credit cards.

Thank you.

New Website

As you may have noticed BYSL has a new website. If you have any comments, questions or concerns please contact Dan Beck (beck_dan@hotmail.com). Also we are looking for pictures to add to the site. Specifically, we would like to add team pictures, especially ones where a team is holding a trophy or medals; and coach pictures to help parents and players identify and appreciate those who dedicate so much time to making the whole operation work. If you have any pictures of teams or coaches, that can be used for the BYSL website, please let Dan Beck know.

Referee Clinic Coming in March

To all concerned:  Peter Stilling will be offering a United States Soccer Federation (FIFA Law) Entry Level Certification Clinic / Intermediate Topics Clinic on the following days:Tuesday, March 18th, 6-10pm
Wednesday, March 19th, 6-10pm …

BYU-Idaho Campus, Rexburg, Idaho — Smith Building, Room 323
Building 35 on the following map: http://www.byui.edu/maps#SMI

MESSAGE FROM PETER STILLING:
“After 5pm, a parking pass is not needed.  Do not park in Service Parking, Fire Zone, or Handicapped Zone (unless you have a Handicapped Placard).  All other parking is first come, first serve. The Entry Level portion of the clinic will be Tuesday thru Friday with the written exam given on Saturday morning at 8am. The test will take one hour with a required review and grading period afterward.  Plan on being completely done with the test around 9:30am to 10am.

For those that want to attend but may have conflicts with soccer practice or soccer games, please let me know in advance so that arrangements can be made.  All needs for arrangements should be announced the first night if not sooner.

After the test is completed, the USSF fitness test will be given on the BYU-Idaho Track.  The test will begin at 10:30am. This test is required for all Grade 6 referees and above wishing to recertify (see attached document).  However, I STRONGLY encourage ANY and ALL referees to challenge themselves to take the test to give yourself and idea of where you are personally with your level of fitness.  The USSF fitness test is a minimum standard of fitness.  If you can’t pass the test, then you need to do some introspection with regard to where you are and where you need to be.  The test criteria is attached.

After the test, I will cut everyone lose for lunch.

Meet back at the BYU-Idaho stadium field at 1:30 for on field training.  Wear comfortable clothing, bring your whistle, cards, flags, running shoes or cleats and be ready to move about.

We will be on the field for about 90 mins then will go back inside around 3pm to learn from some other senior officials.”
