Idaho Falls soccer community is mourning the loss of a man who helped build the sport’s growth in this area.

Dean Cook, longtime Bonneville Youth Soccer League president, club soccer coach and former Idaho Falls High School varsity girls soccer coach, died Monday at 62.

He coached soccer for 25 years — 16 with the Tigers — and had a hand in raising funds for the Idaho Falls Soccer Complex expansion that resulted in four new fields and the installation of lights at the two fields bordering West Broadway during the 2012-13 season.

Among the numerous condolences left on his obituary’s guest book on the Wood Funeral Home website and the BYSL Facebook page were several acknowledgments of how well Cook did his many jobs. Cook did everything from working with referees to scheduling all District 6 soccer games to rewriting the rules, regulations and bylaws for BYSL.

Although Cook never played soccer, he became involved because his children played. One of his sons, Ryan Cook, has been Idaho Falls High School’s boys varsity head coach since 2010.

Cook was involved in so many aspects of local soccer, all BYSL games were canceled this week when the news of his death was shared.

“Everyone was part of an email chain — Pocatello Valley Soccer League, Jefferson Youth Soccer League, Madison Youth Soccer League, Blackfoot Youth Soccer League,” said Charlie Brizzee, BYSL’s director of coaching. “Everyone on this side of the state, they are very aware and feel the impact and the hole of Dean’s absence.”

The young players always remained his top priority, said current U-17 Ballistic coach and former Idaho Falls varsity boys soccer coach Nick Josten.

Josten first met Cook when Josten’s kids were about 10 years old and playing competitive soccer.

“Dean wanted to provide something for everybody,” Josten said. “He’d already been involved in soccer for 10 years when I first got involved. He was there to give something to those kids and it just seemed like that was enough motivation for him.”

Brizzee and Josten both said what made Cook good at wearing his many hats was his passion for soccer and a willingness to help.

“He’d volunteer for everything,” Josten said. “The guy was always taking the hard jobs and the jobs other people didn’t want to do. He just kept a perspective of what it was he was doing and why he was doing it.”

“He was involved at every level that is possible in this area,” Brizzee said. “I can tell you one of his personal philosophies, and we discussed this multiple times over the years, is there’s always a place to play for any kid if they wanted to play, regardless of the level.”

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Idaho Falls Stake Center located at 2025 Jennie Lee Drive. Visitation is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the stake center.

Message from IYSA District II Commissioner Bobbi Tracy:

As I’m sure you can imagine; we are still reeling from the Shock of losing our fearless leader, friend, and family member.  Ryan Cook is trying to get all the “family” details figured out, and Bobbi Tracy is trying to get all the “soccer” stuff figured out.  Dean had HUGE shoes to fill in all his capacity’s, so it will be a bit of a challenge in getting everything back in “smooth” running order.  So your patience is greatly appreciated.  (And thank you for all your thoughts and prayers, they are felt and appreciated.)

Dean Cook will have a viewing Friday night and his funeral will be Saturday.  Ryan is at the funeral home right now, so arrangements will be announced ASAP.

As District Commissioner, I am making the EXECUTIVE DECISION … that ALL games for this week is CANCELLED.  For Dean, for wet fields, for proposed upcoming storm warning ….(and for those that have made that suggestion … thank you)

Grade 7 Referee Course Upcoming

USSF Grade 7 Course

DATE: Tuesday, July 8, 6-10 pm and Wednesday, July 9, 6-10 pm (both nights are required)

LOCATION: BYU-Idaho, Hart Building Room 170

By the new standards that will go into effect on July 1, 2014, a candidate will not be required to have been a Grade 8 Referee to become a Grade 7 referee. However, it is my personal recommendation that the referee has at least completed the Grade 8 online material so that they at least have a basic framework of The Laws of the Game before becoming a Grade 7 referee.  Although this is not mandatory nor can I enforce such a requirement, I make the statement none-the-less.

The purpose of the Grade 7 Referee Course is to prepare officials for the amateur adult game. Based on the level of training provided, U.S. Soccer recommends that these officials be assigned accordingly to best service the game.

See attached Referee Requirements to see the new requirements for the various Grade levels.
